I use this tool almost everyday for marking parts, soft jaws and fixtures. The way this tool is designed allows for beautiful and easy to read engravings without having to dig deep in the part. I no longer have to worry about the annoying “over-flow” when doing characters such as lower case “a”. I run this tool about 0.002-0.0035” deep and then face 0.001” off the part, I am left with characters that look as if the have been laser engraved. If you want that “traditional engraved look” run this tool anywhere from 0.003”-0.010” deep, depending on the letter size and font of course. I have used this tool in everything from hardened tool steels to naval brass. I have been running this tool for about 5 months now, I still have not used the other side of the cutter. Sometimes I get the smallest of burs in brass, a couple swipes with a nylon brush and its like they never happened. It is very possible I need to dial in my speeds and feeds better for brass. On soft materials I run 10,000 RPM and .002” FPT. On mild steels I run 5,000 RPM .0018” FPT. On hardened material I run 2500 RPM (just to be save) and .001” FPT, hardened materials are not something I do often.
